The Roomba j7+ excels here with PrecisionVision Navigation. Its front-facing camera identifies specific objects — shoes, socks, cables, and critically for pet owners, pet waste. It photographs avoided objects and sends you alerts. The "P.O.O.P." (Pet Owner Official Promise) guarantees a replacement if the j7+ fails to avoid pet waste.

The Roborock S8 Pro Ultra uses LiDAR navigation with a front-facing 3D structured light sensor. It detects and avoids obstacles well but does not identify specific object types. It might push a shoe aside rather than steering wide around it.

If your pet has occasional indoor accidents, the Roomba's pet waste avoidance is a standout feature that could save you a very unpleasant cleanup.

Self-Maintenance Dock

Roborock's RockDock Ultra is an all-in-one station: auto-empty dustbin, auto-refill water tank, auto-wash mop pads with hot water, and auto-dry mop pads. It is genuinely hands-off for weeks at a time.

iRobot's Clean Base auto-empties the dustbin into disposable AllergenLock bags. No mopping functions. Bags cost about $17 for a 3-pack and last roughly 60 days each.

Roborock's dock is more capable. iRobot's dock is simpler and smaller. The Roborock dock is roughly the size of a small nightstand and needs a water line or manual tank refills.

Navigation and Mapping

Both vacuums create detailed home maps and support room-specific cleaning, no-go zones, and scheduled runs.

Roborock uses LiDAR, which maps accurately in complete darkness and builds precise room layouts. The S8 Pro Ultra supports multi-floor mapping (up to 4 floors).

The Roomba j7+ uses a camera-based visual SLAM system. It requires some ambient light to navigate (struggles in pitch-dark rooms). It also supports multi-floor mapping and learns room layouts over time.

Noise

The Roborock S8 Pro Ultra runs at about 67 dB on balanced mode. The Roomba j7+ is similar at around 62-65 dB. Neither is whisper-quiet, but both are tolerable during daytime use.

Choose the Roomba j7+ if: pet waste avoidance is your top concern, you prefer a proven brand with reliable customer support, or you want strong cleaning without the mopping complexity. At half the price, it is a strong performer for pet hair on a budget.
